Zinc Oxide (5.0%)
Zinc Oxide (CAS 1314-13-2) is an inorganic (physical) sunscreen agent that provides broad-spectrum UV protection spanning UVB, UVA II, and UVA I almost uniformly, making it the widest-range sunscreen available. It is also officially recognized as a skin protectant and is used to treat skin irritations such as diaper rash. It is available in both standard and nanoparticle forms; research to date indicates that sunscreen nanoparticles remain on the skin surface or in the uppermost dead layer and are not absorbed into living tissue.
Zinc Oxide offers the broadest UV spectrum protection of any single sunscreen ingredient, covering UVB, UVA II, and UVA I. It is highly stable and non-irritating, and additionally functions as a skin protectant and anti-irritant. It is considered one of the best overall sun-protection options available worldwide.
Leaves a noticeable white cast on skin; nanoparticle forms are used to reduce this but carry ongoing regulatory scrutiny (multiple SCCS opinions). Must not be used in applications that may lead to inhalation of the ingredient by the end user (EU Cosmetic Restrictions IV/144). Not recommended in spray or powder formats where lung exposure is possible.
