Tranexamic Acid
Tranexamic Acid (CAS #1197-18-8) is a synthetic amino acid derivative with the IUPAC name Cyclohexanecarboxylic Acid, 4-(Aminomethyl)-, Trans-. It is used in cosmetic formulations primarily as a skin-brightening and soothing agent, and is officially classified under CosIng as an astringent and skin conditioning ingredient. It commonly appears in products at concentrations ranging from 1% to 10%.
Topical tranexamic acid has been studied for its ability to reduce hyperpigmentation and melasma, with one randomized controlled trial comparing 5% topical tranexamic acid favorably against 3% hydroquinone cream. It has also been investigated for reducing acne-related post-inflammatory erythema and for effects on skin pigmentation in combination with microdermabrasion.
