Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt form of hyaluronic acid (HA), a large polymer naturally found in the skin that acts as a sponge to help the skin retain water, maintaining plumpness and elasticity. In solution, sodium hyaluronate dissociates into a hyaluronic acid molecule and a sodium atom, making the two functionally interchangeable in skincare. The salt form is more stable, easier to formulate with, and less expensive than hyaluronic acid, which is why it appears more frequently on ingredient lists. The most common molecular weight used in cosmetic products is 1.5–1.8 million Da, which is considered high molecular weight.
Sodium hyaluronate can bind up to 1,000 times its own weight in water, making it a highly effective moisturizing and humectant ingredient that helps keep skin hydrated, plump, and elastic. As a skin-identical ingredient, it replenishes a substance naturally present in the skin.
