Snail Secretion Filtrate
Snail Secretion Filtrate, also known as snail slime or snail mucin, is the filtered secretion produced by snails (commonly Cornu Aspersum, the garden snail) when under stress. Chemically, it is a complex mixture of proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans, glycoprotein enzymes, hyaluronic acid, copper peptides, antimicrobial peptides, and trace elements including copper, zinc, and iron. Its official CosIng function is listed as skin conditioning. It is widely used in K-Beauty formulations and is an animal-derived ingredient.
Snail Secretion Filtrate has demonstrated antioxidant activity via superoxide dismutase and glutathione s-transferase enzymes, and has been shown to induce fibroblast proliferation and downregulate MMP (a collagen-degrading enzyme), supporting wound healing, skin regeneration, and anti-aging effects. A double-blind 14-week clinical study found significant improvement in fine lines on photoaged skin. It has also been studied for soothing radiation dermatitis, with clinically reported improvements in erythema, itching, and burning pain.
