Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil
Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil, commonly known as jojoba oil, is a golden yellow liquid expressed or extracted from the seeds of the desert shrub Simmondsia chinensis, native to South-western North America. Unlike typical plant oils (which are triglycerides), jojoba oil is chemically a wax ester — a fatty acid bonded to a fatty alcohol — making it structurally unique among plant-derived oils. It is classified as an emollient, hair conditioning, and skin conditioning agent under CosIng, with CAS # 90045-98-0.
Jojoba oil moisturizes the skin through a dual mechanism: it mixes with sebum to form a thin, non-greasy, semi-occlusive protective layer, and it also absorbs into the skin via pores and hair follicles to diffuse into the intercellular spaces of the outer skin layer, leaving it soft and supple. Its close chemical resemblance to human sebum (both being wax esters) may give it skin-balancing properties for oily skin, though this is not fully proven. It is also exceptionally stable and resistant to oxidation compared to conventional plant oils.
