Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil

Ricinus Communis Seed Oil, commonly known as castor oil, is a fixed oil derived from the seeds of the castor bean plant (Ricinus communis), native to tropical Eastern Africa and the Mediterranean Basin. Its primary fatty acid is ricinoleic acid (85–95%), which contains an extra hydroxyl (-OH) group that gives the oil unique properties including greater viscosity, distinct solubility, and the highest gloss of all natural oils when applied to skin. It has been used for over 4,000 years across a wide range of applications, from food to industrial uses, and is a common ingredient in thick, gloss-giving cosmetic formulas such as lipsticks and highlighters.
