Retinyl Palmitate
Retinyl palmitate (RP) is an ester form of vitamin A, formed by combining retinol with palmitic acid, and belongs to the retinoid family. It must undergo a 3-step metabolic conversion (retinyl palmitate → retinol → retinaldehyde → all-trans-retinoic acid) before skin cells can utilize it. Because of this multi-step conversion, it is considered significantly less potent than retinol or tretinoin. Its official CosIng function is listed as skin conditioning.
As a retinoid, retinyl palmitate theoretically supports cell communication and anti-aging activity, but the evidence for its topical effectiveness as an anti-aging ingredient is weak. One study suggests it may offer some photoprotective action against UVB rays, though this is offset by other concerns.
Retinyl palmitate has shown questionable behavior in the presence of UV light; one study found it can cause DNA damage and cytotoxicity in association with UVA radiation. Use at night is recommended as a precaution. Sufficient evidence to establish a causal link to skin cancer has not been produced, but there are also no strong reasons to recommend its use, particularly during the day.
