Potassium Sorbate

Potassium sorbate (CAS 24634-61-5 / 590-00-1) is a cosmetic and food-grade preservative (E202) that works by breaking down into its active form, sorbic acid, in the presence of water at a pH of 3–4. It is effective primarily against mold and yeast, but not bacteria. Because it is not a broad-spectrum preservative on its own, it is typically used in combination with other preservatives in cosmetic formulations.

● Benefits

Helps extend the shelf life of water-containing cosmetic products by inhibiting mold and yeast growth. It is not sufficient as a standalone preservative and must be paired with additional preservatives for adequate broad-spectrum protection.

● Cautions

Only effective in water-containing formulations at pH 3–4; does not work against bacteria and is insufficient as a sole preservative. Must be combined with other preservatives for full-spectrum protection.
