Phytic Acid

Phytic acid is a plant-derived compound (CAS #83-86-3) whose primary function in cosmetic formulations is chelating — it neutralizes metal ions that enter formulas via water, preventing unwanted formula degradation. Despite its name, it is not classified as an exfoliant. It is considered a natural alternative to synthetic chelating agents such as EDTAs.

● Benefits

Its main established benefit is stabilizing cosmetic formulas by binding metal ions (chelating action). It also possesses some antioxidant properties. Clinical studies cited suggest potential depigmenting activity, particularly in combination with other actives like L-ascorbic acid or peel acids, for conditions such as solar lentigines and melasma.
