Octisalate (4.5%)
Ethylhexyl Salicylate (also known as Octisalate or Octyl Salicylate) is a colorless to light yellowish oily liquid used as a chemical UV filter. It absorbs UVB radiation in the 280–320 nm range with a peak absorbance at 306 nm. It is permitted at a maximum concentration of 5% in both the US and Europe, and up to 10% in Japan.
It provides UVB protection and is primarily used in combination with other sunscreen agents to enhance overall SPF. It also serves a formulation role by helping to solubilize other solid UV filters. It has a good safety profile at permitted concentrations.
Not a strong standalone UV filter; must be combined with other sunscreen agents for adequate broad-spectrum protection. Maximum permitted concentration is 5% in the US and EU (10% in Japan).
