Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil
Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil is the essential oil distilled from the leaves of the tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia, Myrtaceae), native to Australia. It is a complex chemical mixture of approximately 100 components, with the major ones being terpinen-4-ol (~40%), γ-Terpinene (~23%), and α-Terpinene (~10%). Terpinen-4-ol is considered the primary active component, though most constituents contribute to the oil's overall activity. It has been used for nearly 100 years for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Tea tree oil is a well-established anti-acne ingredient; multiple studies confirm its effectiveness against P. acnes, with 5% TTO gel shown to be comparable in efficacy to 5% Benzoyl Peroxide lotion, albeit with slower onset and fewer side effects. It also exhibits strong antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal effects. Additionally, it has documented anti-inflammatory and antiseptic actions.
Should never be applied undiluted to skin. Irritant and allergic reactions can occur, particularly from oxidation products in older or improperly stored oil. Sensitive skin types should use with caution. Proper storage (cool, dry, dark place) is important to minimize oxidation and allergen formation.
