Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Extract
Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Extract is derived from the leaves of the tea tree, native to Australia, where it has been used for nearly 100 years for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is a complex chemical mixture of approximately 100 components, with the major ones being terpinen-4-ol (~40%), γ-Terpinene (~23%), and α-Terpinene (~10%). Terpinen-4-ol is considered the primary active component, though most constituents contribute to the oil's overall antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal effects. It is officially listed under CosIng functions as antioxidant and perfuming.
Tea tree oil is a well-established anti-acne ingredient, with multiple studies confirming its effectiveness against P. acnes; a 5% TTO gel has been shown comparable in efficacy to 5% Benzoyl Peroxide lotion, though with slower onset and fewer side effects. It also exhibits broad antimicrobial activity including antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal effects, as well as anti-inflammatory and soothing actions.
Should never be applied undiluted to skin. Irritant and allergic reactions can occur, particularly from oxidation products that form in older or improperly stored oil. Sensitive skin types should exercise caution. Proper storage (cool, dry, dark place) is important to minimize degradation and allergen formation.
