Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Extract
Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Extract is derived from the leaves of the tea tree, native to Australia, where it has been used for nearly 100 years for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is a complex chemical mixture of approximately 100 components, with the major ones being terpinen-4-ol (~40%), γ-Terpinene (~23%), and α-Terpinene (~10%). Terpinen-4-ol is considered the primary active component, though most constituents contribute to the oil's overall antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal effects. It is widely recognized as an established anti-acne ingredient, with studies showing 5% TTO gel to be comparable in efficacy to 5% Benzoyl Peroxide lotion against acne-causing P. acnes bacteria.
Tea tree extract has well-documented antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties, making it effective against acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes). Multiple clinical studies confirm its efficacy as an anti-acne treatment, with a slower onset than benzoyl peroxide but fewer side effects. It also provides soothing and antioxidant benefits to the skin.
Should never be applied undiluted to the skin. Irritant and allergic reactions can occur, particularly from oxidation products in older or improperly stored oil. Sensitive skin types should use with caution. Proper storage (cool, dry, dark place) is important to minimize degradation and allergen formation.
