Madecassoside (10Ppm)
Madecassoside is one of the main biologically active components of Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola), classified as a pentacyclic triterpene saponin. Its CAS number is 34540-22-2 and its official CosIng functions are listed as antioxidant and skin conditioning. It is used in cosmetic formulations typically at low concentrations (e.g., 0.05%–0.3%) and is sourced or synthesized for use as an isolated active ingredient.
Madecassoside has well-established wound healing, skin-soothing, and antioxidant activities. It is reported to induce collagen expression and modulate inflammatory mediators, potentially addressing signs of aging such as wrinkles, firmness, and skin hydration. It also shows promise in inhibiting UV-induced melanin synthesis (relevant for hyperpigmentation) and in reducing redness, peeling, and itching in atopic dermatitis- and psoriasis-prone skin.
Most clinical studies cited involve combination formulas (e.g., with Vitamin C), making it difficult to isolate the contribution of Madecassoside alone. The melanin-inhibition study was conducted on a small group of 23 volunteers, so results should be interpreted with caution.
