Madecassoside (1000 Ppm)
Madecassoside is one of the main biologically active components of Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola), classified chemically as a pentacyclic triterpene saponin. Its CAS number is 34540-22-2 and EC number is 252-076-1. It is used in cosmetic formulations for its antioxidant and skin-conditioning functions as listed in CosIng. It has been studied at concentrations ranging from 0.05% to 5% in combination with other actives.
Madecassoside has well-established wound healing, skin-soothing, and antioxidant activities. It is known to induce collagen expression and/or modulate inflammatory mediators, potentially preventing and correcting signs of aging. It also shows promise in inhibiting UV-induced melanin synthesis (relevant for hyperpigmentation), and at 0.2% has been shown to reduce redness and peeling in atopic dermatitis and itching in psoriasis-prone skin.
A 6-month study combined Madecassoside with 5% Vitamin C, making it difficult to isolate Madecassoside's individual anti-aging contribution. Most in-vivo studies cited are manufacturer-sponsored or small in scale.
