Madecassoside
Madecassoside is one of the main biologically active components of Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola), classified as a pentacyclic triterpene saponin. Its CAS number is 34540-22-2 and it is officially listed in CosIng with antioxidant and skin conditioning functions. It is used in cosmetic formulations typically at low concentrations (e.g., 0.05%–0.3%) and is found in a wide range of soothing and calming skincare products.
Madecassoside has well-established wound healing, skin-soothing, and antioxidant activities. It is reported to induce collagen expression and modulate inflammatory mediators, with studies showing improvement in wrinkles, firmness, and hydration when combined with Vitamin C. Additional evidence suggests it can inhibit UV-induced melanin synthesis and reduce redness, peeling, and itching associated with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis-prone skin.
The anti-aging evidence from the cited 6-month study is confounded by the concurrent use of 5% Vitamin C, making it difficult to isolate Madecassoside's individual contribution to those results.
