Lanolin
Lanolin is a refined derivative of the unctuous fat-like sebaceous secretion of sheep. It consists of a highly complex mixture of esters of high molecular weight aliphatic, steroid, or triterpenoid alcohols and fatty acids. It carries CAS number 8006-54-0 and is also known by its Ph. Eur. name Adeps Lanae. It functions as an emollient, emulsifier, and surfactant/cleansing agent in cosmetic formulations.
Lanolin acts as an emollient that helps soften and condition skin by forming a protective layer. Its complex ester composition supports moisture retention and barrier function. It is widely used in lip balms, nipple creams, and intensive skin protectants.
Comedogenicity is rated 0–1 per the source, indicating a very low but non-zero potential to clog pores in some individuals. Individuals with known wool or lanolin sensitivity/allergy should avoid use.
