Houttuynia Cordata Extract
Houttuynia cordata extract is derived from a flowering herb native to Southeast Asia, belonging to the Saururaceae family (CAS #: 164288-50-0). Its main active components are polyphenolic flavonoids — including quercetin, quercitrin, hyperoside, and rutin — which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. The extract also contains polysaccharides composed of various sugar units that function as humectants. Flavonoid content can vary depending on whether the extract is taken from the roots or leaves, and whether water or alcohol extraction is used.
The flavonoids in the extract provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial benefits, with quercitrin also shown to help reduce UVB-induced oxidative damage. The polysaccharide fraction acts as a humectant, helping skin retain moisture. An in-vitro study also suggests strong anti-allergic effects that may be helpful for conditions such as atopic dermatitis.
Flavonoid content and efficacy may vary significantly depending on the plant part (root vs. leaf) and extraction method (water vs. alcohol) used, which can affect consistency across products.
