Honey
Honey (also listed as Mel) is a bee-derived, supersaturated sugar solution with CAS # 8028-66-8. Approximately 95% of its dry weight is sugar, with the remaining 5% comprising proteins, amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, and minerals. Its complex chemical composition varies depending on floral source, with darker varieties generally richer in antioxidant phenolic compounds. Special subtypes include acacia honey (higher fructose, more water-soluble) and manuka honey (extra antibacterial potency due to methylglyoxal).
Honey is highly moisturizing and acts as a humectant on the skin. It also demonstrates soothing, antioxidant, and significant antibacterial and antifungal properties. There is substantial empirical evidence, with emerging scientific support, that honey promotes the healing of wounds and burns.
