Guaiazulene
Guaiazulene (INCI: Guaiazulene; CAS #489-84-9) is a synthetic or naturally derived azulene compound with the chemical name 7-Isopropyl-1,4-Dimethylazulene. It is a deep blue-colored hydrocarbon often associated with chamomile-derived azulene and is used in cosmetics for its antimicrobial and perfuming properties. It has been studied in the context of diaper dermatitis treatment and for its photochemical behavior including reactive oxygen species formation under light exposure.
Guaiazulene is recognized in cosmetics primarily for its antimicrobial and perfuming functions per official CosIng classification. Limited clinical research suggests potential benefit in treating recalcitrant diaper dermatitis. Its characteristic blue color and association with azulene also lend it a soothing reputation in formulations.
Photoirradiation studies indicate that guaiazulene can generate reactive oxygen species and induce lipid peroxidation upon light exposure, suggesting potential photosensitivity concerns. Use in sun-exposed applications should be approached with caution.
