Gluconolactone (3 %)
Gluconolactone (d-glucono-1,5-lactone, CAS 90-80-2) is a polyhydroxy acid (PHA) often described as a next-generation AHA. It has a larger molecular size than traditional AHAs, which limits skin penetration and reduces irritation potential. Its CosIng-listed functions are chelating and skin conditioning, and it is used at concentrations ranging from around 1.5% up to 30% in commercial formulations.
Gluconolactone gently exfoliates dead skin cells to smooth and even skin tone while providing anti-aging benefits such as increased skin thickness and reduced wrinkles comparable to AHAs. It is an effective moisturizer that can help repair an impaired skin barrier, and it also exhibits antioxidant and chelating properties. Unlike AHAs, it does not increase sun sensitivity, making it suitable even for sensitive, rosacea-prone, or post-procedure skin.
No increase in photosensitivity reported (unlike AHAs), but sunscreen use is still recommended. Generally well-tolerated by sensitive skin, including rosacea and atopic dermatitis; no major contraindications noted in the source.
