Gluconolactone

Gluconolactone (d-glucono-1,5-lactone, CAS 90-80-2) is a polyhydroxy acid (PHA), often described as a next-generation AHA. It has a larger molecular size than AHAs, which results in lower skin penetration and reduced irritation potential. Its official CosIng functions are listed as chelating and skin conditioning.

● Benefits

Gluconolactone gently exfoliates dead skin cells to smooth and even skin texture, and provides anti-aging benefits such as increased skin thickness and decreased wrinkles comparable to AHAs but with significantly less irritation, stinging, and burning. It is also an effective moisturizer that helps repair an impaired skin barrier, and possesses antioxidant and chelating properties. Unlike AHAs, it has been shown not to increase sun sensitivity, and is suitable for sensitive, rosacea-prone, or post-procedure skin.

● Cautions

No photosensitization reported (unlike AHAs); however, the source still recommends daily sunscreen use. Generally well-tolerated even by sensitive and rosacea-prone skin, though it is an acid and should be introduced gradually.
