Ectoin

Ectoin is a naturally derived extremolyte — a small stress-protection molecule originally isolated in 1985 from a microorganism living in an Egyptian salt lake. Its primary mode of action is binding water molecules (kosmotropic activity) to form stabilizing hydration shells around cells, proteins, and enzymes. It is a multi-functional active used in cosmetics at concentrations typically ranging from 0.3% to 7%, and is also approved for use in medical products (e.g., inhalation solutions) in Europe.

● Benefits

Ectoin provides skin hydration, barrier repair, soothing/anti-inflammatory effects, and protection against UV, pollution (particulate matter, PAHs, heavy metals), and blue/visible light. Clinical studies support anti-wrinkle effects, reduction of skin redness comparable to 0.25% hydrocortisone, and near-complete protection of epidermal Langerhans cells from UV damage at 0.5% concentration. Higher concentrations (5–7%) are used as OTC medical treatments for eczema and atopic skin.
