Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Peel Oil is a volatile essential oil expressed from the peel of the pink grapefruit (Citrus paradisi, Rutaceae). Its primary component is limonene, which accounts for approximately 90% of its composition and is responsible for its characteristic citrus fragrance. It is officially classified under CosIng functions as masking and perfuming, with CAS number 8016-20-4. It is subject to Cosmetic Restriction II/358 R1.
The oil exhibits antibacterial and antifungal activity, supported by multiple published studies on citrus peel essential oils. Its high limonene content provides a strong, pleasant citrus scent commonly used in perfuming applications.
Contains furanocoumarins, which make the oil mildly phototoxic — caution is advised when used in daytime products or when skin will be exposed to sunlight. Limonene, its dominant component (~90%), is a frequent skin sensitizer and may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
