Ceramide NS
Ceramide NS, formerly known under the INCI name Ceramide 2, is an N-acylated sphingolipid consisting of sphingosine having the D-erythro structure linked to a normal saturated or unsaturated fatty acid. Unlike the broader Ceramide 2 definition, Ceramide NS is limited specifically to sphingosine-based ceramides, excluding dihydrosphingosine (sphinganine) variants. It is classified as a skin-identical ingredient and carries CAS number 100403-19-8. Its listed functions per CosIng are hair conditioning and skin conditioning.
As a skin-identical ceramide, Ceramide NS supports the skin's natural lipid barrier by replenishing ceramides that are naturally found in the stratum corneum. It is used in formulations for its skin conditioning properties, helping to maintain moisture and reinforce barrier integrity.
