Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine
Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine (also known as Tinosorb S or Bemotrizinol) is a broad-spectrum chemical UV filter covering the full UVB and UVA range (280–400 nm), with peak protections at approximately 310 and 345 nm. It is an oil-soluble, slightly yellowish powder that remains largely on the skin surface rather than being absorbed. It is widely used in Europe, Australia, and Asia but is not FDA-approved for use in the United States.
It provides broad-spectrum UV protection and is notably photostable, meaning it does not significantly deteriorate upon UV exposure. It can also stabilize other less photostable sunscreen agents such as avobenzone. A 2007 study comparing 18 EU-authorized sunscreen agents found it delivered the highest SPF protection at the maximum permitted concentration, achieving SPF 20 on its own.
Not FDA-approved; unavailable in US-market sunscreens due to regulatory constraints rather than safety concerns. The source notes it does not exhibit estrogenic activity, unlike some other chemical sunscreen filters. EU cosmetic regulations restrict its use (Annex VI/25).
