Betaine Salicylate

Betaine salicylate is the product formed by the reaction of betaine with salicylic acid. It functions as both a mild exfoliant (keratolytic) and a natural moisturizer/skin smoothing agent. It is commonly found in K-Beauty formulations, where regulations restrict the use of pure salicylic acid to very small amounts. A generally accepted estimate is that betaine salicylate is approximately twice as gentle as salicylic acid, meaning a 4% betaine salicylate product is considered comparable to a 2% salicylic acid formulation.

● Benefits

Betaine salicylate provides mild exfoliation and skin smoothing while also offering moisturizing properties derived from its betaine component. It carries antimicrobial and keratolytic activity, making it useful for acne-prone and congested skin. Its gentler profile compared to pure salicylic acid makes it suitable for sensitive skin types.

● Cautions

As a salicylate-based exfoliant, individuals with salicylate sensitivity or aspirin allergy should exercise caution. Like other BHA exfoliants, it may increase photosensitivity; sun protection is advisable during use.
