Acetyl Glucosamine
Acetyl Glucosamine (N-Acetyl-α-D-Glucosamine, CAS# 10036-64-3) is an amino acid sugar naturally found in the skin. It serves as a precursor for the biosynthesis of hyaluronic acid, making it a skin-identical ingredient and natural moisturizing factor. It is used in cosmetic formulations at concentrations such as 2% and 8% for its moisturizing, anti-aging, and brightening properties.
At 2%, double-blind clinical trials show it can improve the appearance of wrinkles (particularly around the eye area) and fade hyperpigmentation/brown spots after 8 weeks of daily use. Its efficacy against hyperpigmentation is synergistically enhanced when combined with niacinamide. As a hyaluronic acid precursor, it also supports skin hydration.
Results for wrinkle improvement and brown spot fading are visible but modest; realistic expectations are advised. No specific contraindications are noted in the source.
